Two honest labels
Every buying guide carries one of two labels at the top. They tell you what kind of evidence stands behind the recommendation.
Researched picks
We have not yet used these products ourselves. The picks are based on manufacturers’ published specifications and manuals, independent standards and safety information (such as recall notices), and our own synthesis of what matters for the task — explained in the guide. We never describe a researched pick as if we had handled it, tasted the results or measured its performance.
Tested by Erisha
We bought or borrowed the product and used it in our own kitchen. A tested guide states what we did, when we did it and what we measured, and shows our own photographs. If a brand supplied a sample, we say so in the guide, and we return or donate it afterwards.
How we choose picks
- Start from the job. We define what the tool must do for real recipes — for a kitchen scale, that means resolving 1 g, handling a full bowl of dough and staying on long enough for a recipe.
- Find the candidates. We look at what bakers actually buy and what is widely available in the US and Canada.
- Gather evidence. Specifications come from the manufacturer or the retailer’s product detail page, with the date we checked. Conflicting information is flagged, not resolved by guesswork.
- Choose before commissions. Picks are set before anyone looks at whether a retailer pays an affiliate commission. Writers don’t see commission rates.
- Explain the trade-offs. Every pick says who it suits and who should choose something else.
Our evidence standard
Every factual statement — a capacity, a warranty, a temperature — is recorded with its source and the date we accessed it. If we cannot verify something, we leave it out and note the gap. Food-safety statements follow government guidance such as FoodSafety.gov (US) and Health Canada, and scientific explanations cite peer-reviewed sources.
Prices and availability
Prices change constantly. Each pick shows the date its price was checked, and the “Check price” button always takes you to the retailer’s current price. Shopping from Canada? Use the region switch at the top of the page; where we have not yet verified a Canadian retailer, we say so.
Keeping guides current
We re-check prices and availability regularly and review each guide’s picks when products change, are discontinued or are recalled. Each guide shows the date it was last updated, and corrections are handled under our corrections policy.
